Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it. Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned; forgive, and you will be forgiven; give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you. These are the words of Jesus in his witness of theosis—for God became man that man might become God; being perfect as the heavenly Father is perfect. Paul writes, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.
But, writes James, you do not have, because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions.
When considering that asking wrongly is holding back being perfect as the heavenly Father is perfect, to ask rightly of God is the most urgent of Christian disciplines to master. Indeed, the journey of Christification and deification into the fullness of God—theosis—finds asking rightly to be at the very heart of the Father’s grace and destiny for humanity.
The prior of a New Zealand monastery offers guiding light to the reader’s feet along the path that prunes all that cannot sit on the Father’s throne in perfect partnership with God.
